|
|
|
... but which one to get?
The network consists of 3 computers for wireless, and 2 x-box's to be hardwired. Everything will be running off a cable modem. Also, I'd like something that could act as a firewall so I don't have to have a software firewall anymore.
Last I checked 802.11g was the best type around, but is there a better standard now? Also, I've heard I need to find one that supports WPA encryption, correct?
Thanks guys.

The only difference I can see is that the more expensive one has a USB port, so you can stick a USB disk or memory card directly on the router and use it as a networked disk. I've never seen that before. It's sort of cool, but I'm not sure I'd bother.

The only problem I can see with netgear is that it apparently causes you to forgot to turn your caplocks key off ...

I understand its completely open source, but i didn't see anything about 152-bit encryption. Is it able to support this?
Also, i need a PCI card. Can i get any linksys one and be able to get some new firmware to support 108mb/s and 152-bit encryption, or no?

pffft overrated, use RIPv1 . Go with the linksys and use a 128bit WEP Key plus MAC filtering. This way, it will only take someone an hour to crack into your wireless, but if someone wants to sit in front of your house for an hour they must have a reason.

I'd also suggest replacing any 2.4ghz wireless phones with 5.8ghz phones while your at it. Nothing like hearing the phone ring and getting disconnected from the internet because your phone decided to use the same channel as your router Although some phones have a very limited channel range and may not interfere at all, but some use a larger range of frequencies (channels) in the 2.4ghz range and may cause you some problems.
It was fun trying to explain this to some people when i did tech support for Belkin's networking products. They got pretty p****d when they found out they either had to get a new phone or just stop using the one they had if they wanted to maintain a stable connection to their router.
