Actually, the technology has already been produced to make it cleaner and more efficient. Its just not out there as a widely accepted energy any more. The technology to produce this type of advance was most likely spurred by those that care about clean air and minimizing our dependance on oil and other such radical, subversive andamerica hating ideas.
That Bush is bringing it up with his record on the environment is ironic.

But not surprising because I am observing democrats trying to sound like republicans and republicans trying to sound like democrats in the hopes that the shit they are flinging will stick here and there and bring in a vote or two.

My guess is it's a lot easier to refine a known procedure, than invent something totally new from scratch.

It's cool to say "we don't want to be dependant on foreign oil anymore, so when I'm president, I'll make sure we invent something no one else ever thought of, and make it mainstream all within the next 4 years." but you have to be able to deliver.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather have polution than see people drive around in those electro cars. Not only are they ugly and slow, they also make one hell of a noise.

When someone can come up with a technology that is:

1 - clean
2 - cheap
3 - doesn't look like a failed college experiment
4 - doesn't cause an abnormal noise level
5 - can be made available without too much trouble (ie recharging like at gas stations)
6 - doesn't set of Geiger-counters after a collision
(7) - can be used in planes and ships.

THEN you can start talking about becoming independant from OPEC. Until then don't p**s off those, who can ground every plane worldwide (and drive most airlines into bankruptcy) and bring most cars to a stop with a 30 second press conference.

"I regret to inform you, that Saudi Arabia is reducing the amount of oil drilled a day by 2 million barrels. I'm very sorry, but it's going to be a cold winter for all of you. Have a nice time" (right now I believe there's a surplus of 1 million barrels a day - correct me if I'm wrong)

Considering every other OPEC country is already pumping at max capacity there's not a whole lot you can do.
Much worse than paying $5 more at the gas station would be the effect on airlines and those who have to travel a lot. (esp business travellers)

I believe the refined coal energy is for industrial use, not your car.

All fossil fuels suck.

It's all about hydrogen baby... hydrogen.

Something to be said about using the most common element in the universe a fuel source.

Christ, don't make me attempt to explain this again.

Hydrogen gas occurs in the atmosphere at a concentration of less than 1 part per million. Making H2 is a money and materials LOSING process. Thermodynamically, it is about the worst idea ever.

You realize, don't you, that fossil fuels are one of the few ways of producing H2 gas in commercial quantities?

Hydrogen fuel cells are promising as batteries to power automobiles, not as an actual source of fuel.

I know this is in the political forum and nobody cares, but please open a chem1000 textbook before complaining about our country's dependance on fossil fuels.

Actually at this point in time and technology this is the logical thing to do.

But because there are so many scumbags who cry we haven't built one in what, 20 years?

Yeah, I don't get why there are so many idiot who think of hydrogen as a fuel source.

Wait a minute. This is no longer a political thread. Since the rule is that if a thread becomes political it is moved to the political forum, shouldn't it follow that a political thread that becomes non-political should be moved to the general forum?

well let me help you out here. Since this is science oriented and Bush hates science, its got some political undertones.

How's that?

But his "hate for science" is "religiously motivated" which is the same as politics on realpoor. And he can hate you because born-again Christians are to hate evil, and you are the purest essence of evil. Therefore, since Bush's hatred of science is politically motivated based on realpoor's definition of politics and you are purely evil, you are banned...and stuff.
