will running 3X256 mb DDR 400 ram mess up my system? Everyone seems to run DDR in pairs, but I can't seem to find a reason for that...

If you have a dual channel, it might not matter, because you'd have two sticks for one channel, and then only one for the other...and, stuff.

Umm...yeah. (That being said, just get 2 512 sticks.)

honestly (1) 512 would have been enough

yeah, I may just go 2X256 for now, and then later when I have cash throw more ram in (I'd still have 2 more empty slots)

in order to actually run at 400mhz speeds you need 2 sticks of the same speed and size RAM, otherwise its not going to. if you are using more then 2 you better be using 4~. since dual channel actually needs two channels to work, heh.

what do you all think would run faster 2X512 of a standard speed ram, or 2X256 of low latency ram?

I'm stretching to think of a program that would currently really use 1024 megs of ram...so maybe the low latency would benefit me more now, and then later once programs that really need 1024 i'll foot the bill for another 2X256 of low latency....

decisions decisions....

for my mobo
it has 3 slots, 2 channels
for ddr you have to have the same amount in each channel
so you need to have something like
256 and 256 in channel 1 and 512 in channel 2
or
256 in channel 1 and 256 in channel 2

the book also says that you can run 3 sticks of all the same size
but you lose some speed.

also to note,
there is a site with a big test on the low lat settings
and for all the fiddling they did to get it maxed out
not counting higher scorce on benchmark progs, they
only got a like 1-2 extra fps in games and a few seconds
off render times etc.

as for big programs,
the next ver of adobe premire is reported to req 800mb ram
