The old way of losing luggage just wasn't spectacular enough.

PASSENGER'S CASE PLUNGES 12,000FT IN FALL FROM AIRBORNE PLANE'S CARGO HOLD

09:00 - 07 September 2004 An airline is being investigated after a suitcase fell out of a plane at 12,000ft.

The cargo hold of a Eastern Airways flight from Leeds to Aberdeen popped open mid-flight and luggage belonging to a woman travelling to a funeral fell out. The captain of the Jetstream 32 aircraft, registration G-Byra, realised there was a problem when a warning light came on in the cockpit but there was nothing he could do until he landed.

An aviation expert likened a 15-kilo suitcase falling from 12,000ft to that of a "bomb" which would have killed anyone in its path instantly.

A Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesman confirmed last night that an investigation into the incident on Wednesday, August 18, had been launched.

An aviation expert claimed the problem was a common fault in the ageing Jetstream fleet, many of which date back to the 1960s.

He said that in one week last year, five takeoffs had to be aborted because of problems with cargo-hold doors.

"Lots of questions about the technical standards of these planes have to be asked," he said.

"Passengers pay a lot of money for tickets, between £160 and £400, and they expect that everything is 100% correct.

"The captain was flying at around 12,000 feet and saw that the warning light had come on in the cockpit, and when the plane landed at Aberdeen it was found that a bag was missing.

"Nobody knows where the bag fell, but luggage weighing 15kilos falling from that height could have killed someone if it had hit them. It would have fallen like a bomb and gone straight through the roof of a car.

"It is ridiculous that, in 2004, during a time of increased aircraft security, that a baggage pod could have opened mid-flight.

"It is not acceptable. I know that the captain was very upset as was the woman who lost her bag."

Eastern Airways confirmed that a item of luggage was lost from one of its planes in flight.

A company spokesperson said: "In accordance with the mandatory occurrence-reporting procedure, the company informed the CAA of the incident and is currently carrying out an investigation in conjunction with the aircraft's manufacturer."

He said that the plane was built in 1989 and not in the 1960s.

A spokesman for Aberdeen Airport said the incident would not have been recorded because it was a matter for the carrier.

"I have never heard of this happening to a plane landing at Aberdeen Airport," he added.

What the f**k. How come the trailing quotation mark in my subject turns into "&q"? I even edited it and fixed it, and it did it again.

I believe it to be an array problem, if the " mark occurs at the size limit of the subject line text, then it is unable to handle it. This ties into coding issues with special characters and strings. It's likey that the " character needs a &q notation to be understood within the array, but this & symbol increases the array beyond its bounds chopping off the q and making it become & instead of &q = ".

A 15 kilo suitcase having the same effect as a bomb when it hits the ground or person from 12,000 feet. I grasp the whole Idea of maximum velocity and momentum, but then what would the impact of an actual bomb weighing hundreds or thousands of pounds be in comparrison? Equivilant to a really really big bomb? Equivilant to a plane crash? I think it was a slight exageration there.

Yes, I understand that not all bombs are dropped from planes, but this person made it seem like this suitcase would be just as powerful as a bomb dropped. I think if this person wasn't trying to infer a falling bomb they would have used an impact comparrison with a car crash.

Anyway I just have a personal issue with exageration. It's my problem though.

The point is, if it had landed on your head, you wouldn't have said "Oh shit! I'm glad that wasn't a bomb!" From your perspective it doesn't really matter what hit you, because your head is now a fine mist all over the suitcase LZ.

Hmm. 15 kilos is what, 33 lbs or so? Terminal velocity for a person is 120 mph or so. A suitcase is probably a bit more streamlined, call it 175 mph? Then the energy would be 33*175*175/2 = 505312 lb (mph^2).

That's equivalent to getting hit by a 3000 lb car going around 18 miles an hour, but concentrated in a smaller impact area and pushing whatever it hit against the ground rather than sending it flying. Not exactly bomblike, but it would still do some damage.
