This is just a re-cap of what I posted on the Graffe boards 'cause they were talking about the Batman: Hush saga. But anyway, yeah...
Here's my question. What are the various different (comic) books out there that you people activly read and why? I don't want like "x-men because... it's x-men!" type answers. gimme the real deal.
Here's my list.
Ultimate X-Men
Ultimate Spider-Man
The Ultimates
Spawn
The Authority
Amazing Spider-Man
Savage Dragon
Ok, let me start off. My first taste in comics was when I was a kid (back in '90 or '91). I would walk down to the local 7-11 and get random issues of Uncanny X-Men. The X-Cutioners song was what started it all off. I had to get the whole thing. Fast foward 10 or so years... I've bought thousands of comics by this time. I have boxes upon boxes... all marvel and image. I never could get into DC, don't ask me why. But all the sudden comics got boring. I still had my 2 favorites that I kept buying, but that's it. Spawn & Savage Dragon. the rest just died off. Spider-Man just went strange, as did the rest of the books out there.
Creativity died, and all they could do was try to be even weirder than the next book in order to make the sales, it seems. I picked up Witchblade because the art was beautiful. When Mike Turner left after issue 25 to make his own book (Fathom), I went with. Now that book is also "over", but he's in the process of making a new story. I'll be there as well.
Anyway, as for my picks. A friend of mine that works at the comic store that I goto told me I should really start reading Amazing Spider-Man again. aparantly this new writer (Strazinski or something) was hot shit, and was turning the book around by leaps and bounds. So I picked up the trade paper... Starting at the new issue 30 and going on (it's at issue 56 or 57 now). Well I'll be damned, he did make Spider-Man a good book again. And not even with the old villins. There's a whole new cast, and they don't "suck"!
Ok, That was one good suggestion, lemme try this again. What should I try now? He tells me "The Authority". Fine, Let me snag these first few paper back's, as well as the sub-story, Jenny Sparks. I'll be damned, you did it again. This is problably the best book I've ever touched. The story is off the wall with creativity. Anything can and does happen. You won't be dissapointed, that's for sure! A guy can wear city's? WTF? This girl is the 20th centry? how's that possible? And the villins are even better yet! Volume 1 of authority ended (to my sadness) at issue 29. Just recently they began Volume 2, but with that, the story died down a bit. They're not allowed to be as "uncontrolled" as the writers have been in the past. As of now, Volume 2 is up to issue 4.
Ok, next up. You're batting 2 for 2, what do you suggest now?
"Ultimate Spider-Man". Why, isn't it just the same old crap all over again? "No way. Take the hero's you loved and forget about them. Now imagine them being reborn now, with today's problems and today's attitudes. There you have marvel's Ultimate line." Ok, so I grabbed the first Trade Paper. this is pretty much the same story I always knew, but told in a different way. Peter Parker is a horney kid now, with the same problems I had in HS. It almost reminds me of the way they told the movie. Ok, let me try TPB2. Now I'm hooked. This book is friggin' GREAT, the only real problem that I have is how quick each issue flies out of my hands. I'm reading it so fast that I need more. (Currently this book is sitting at issue 46)
If ultimate spider-man is this good, maybe I should try The Ultimates. it's a newer Ultimate series book, but it's got the guys from The Avengers in it. So I snag the TP and HOLY SHIT! I LOVE IT!!!! This is clearly the "current" best book I've read in ages. So I quickly go back and buy up all the back issues. This book is now at issue 11, but it comes out once every 2 months it seems. /sigh...
Ok, I need to fill the fix that gave me, what next what next? Ultimate X-Men it is. jesus christ, where did Marvel get all this tallent? This book is just as good as the others. I'd rank it better than Spider-Man, but not as good as Ultimates, but that's fine. It's still a GREAT story. I can't say enough about it, but I know that every wednesday I'm calling the store and I sigh when they tell me that it won't be out for another 2 weeks 'cause it just came out last week. There is no god... (This book is at issue 36 now)
Spawn. I've been a fan of spawn since I picked it up. It hits home. This guy just can't catch any breaks. Everything he does right ends up blowing up in his face.. who cares if he sold his soul to the devil to come back and see his wife. Recently, this book is taking you even further out there. Everything we've come to know and trust is just erupting and being turned up-side-down. Who is your friend? Who isn't? As an agent of hell, it's hard to figure it out. I'd deffinatly reccamend this one, but you should start it from the beginning... it's worth that much at least. (This is currently at Issue 127)
Finally, I'm having to wonder about Savage Dragon. This book started off really good. It was my first "down to earth, real life violent" book, and it stuck with me. Lately though, Eric Larson is trying to make all his readers kill themselves or something, 'cause this book is all over the place. It doesn't sit still at all, and I'm not sure I really like it like that. There's just TOO MUCH going on, and if you miss even 1 issue, you're screwed. I don't see how you can have a book have this much movement. But it seems to be taking it's toll. it started off slow, but now it seems that he's just trying to top himself over and over again, so the stories are getting more and more far fetched. to the point where nothing at all really can be belived. /sigh, oh well... Maybe he'll pull his shit together soon. (This is at Issue 110).
Ok, that's my big ass write up about the comics I have and why I have them. Tomorow I'll go out and pick up the first 11 issues of the Batman Hush saga, 'cause you guys seem to suggest it so much. I'll write a review of that one later on. Hope you all find some enjoyment of my addiction, and can jump into your own.

Don't read comics anymore, but I used to read Thor and the old Marvel Transformers and Star Wars series. Was never much of a super-hero fan, obviously.
I feel bad for kids of the last 10-15 years or so, I used to be able to pick up new comics for $.50 and now they're like 6x times that and it's not like the stories have gotten any better.

I was a loyal Iron Man reader in the 80's and up until about 5 years ago. I have some old Tales of Suspense issues with him.
When Valiant and Image exploded onto the scene in the 90's, my cousin and I bought multiples of just about everything. I have like 5 copies of Turok #1, Savage Dragon, etc.
Then the bottom fell out, the comics became as valuable as their cover price and I stopped buying.
I still love Iron Man although I outgrew comics, and I'd like to see a movie done, but only if they focus on his struggle with alcohol and only if the bad guy is Dr. Doom or The Mandarin =)

Started collecting comics in the late 70's. I enjoyed reading the Legion of Super Heroes, enjoyed the sci-fi flair and the team interactions.
From there I branched out into X-Men...X-Factor...X-Mutants...etc. (Clairemont killed the X-Men for me, opening up multiple story lines, without settling any of them.)
Then once comics seemed to be mainstreamed, I started collecting some of the more esoteric stuff...Faust, Armor, Cycops, Alien Legion, Warlord, Elementals, etc...
The only Image line that I collected with gusto was Wetworks. Couldn't get into Spawn or some of the others.

I didn't read that many series, but in the 80s I really liked Nexus, Grimjack, Whisper, The Sandman (which is apparently about to come back), and of course the intermittently published Beanworld. A few others too, but I can't remember any more.
