Quote:
SCHIEFFER: Mr. President, new question, two minutes.

You said that if Congress would vote to extend the ban on assault weapons, that you'd sign the legislation, but you did nothing to encourage the Congress to extend it. Why not?

BUSH: Actually, I made my intentions -- made my views clear. I did think we ought to extend the assault weapons ban, and was told the fact that the bill was never going to move, because Republicans and Democrats were against the assault weapon ban, people of both parties.

I believe law-abiding citizens ought to be able to own a gun. I believe in background checks at gun shows or anywhere to make sure that guns don't get in the hands of people that shouldn't have them.

But the best way to protect our citizens from guns is to prosecute those who commit crimes with guns.

And that's why early in my administration I called the attorney general and the U.S. attorneys and said: Put together a task force all around the country to prosecute those who commit crimes with guns.

And the prosecutions are up by about 68 percent -- I believe -- is the number.

Neighborhoods are safer when we crack down on people who commit crimes with guns.

To me, that's the best way to secure America.

Couldn't get it done... was told it wouldn't move - so I didn't try?

shame on you Bush

Obmar, it has been pointed out time and time again that the Assault Weapons Ban had no effect on crime rates. "Assault Weapons" have been banned for over 60 years, and still are under other gun legislation. The Assault Weapons Ban was nothing more than a "feel good law" that did nothing to actually curb crime rates.

Try doing some research of your own for once instead of relying in partisan drivel.

The assault weapon ban was a joke.

How many times do you hear of someone dying to a bayonet on pre-ban AR-15. Uh.. never?

allowing that ban to lapse was foolish - perhaps it was an opportunity to even expand its reach? make it actually cover more?

oh but that would be why we didn't take it up i suppose....

All the ban did was take away much of the "cool factor" of some guns. And don't f*****g touch any gun rights I have now, it's just right. Normal checks for a rifle or handgun plus the wait on handguns and a long term FBI check and fair sized charge($500+)added on to each full auto weapon. No one with a felony can buy a full auto.

you are not old enough to own a gun, and you have zero weapon rights until you are 18 years of age...in fact you 'own' absolutely nothing.

p.s. cough*weapon*cough guns are huge.

anyway, f**k the ban. right to arms! I like my weapons and no liberal is going to take them from me.

actually sir, the ban makes it illegal to sell them at all - or manufacture them

so someone acting as a front (someone without a record but still going to sell them to criminals) for criminals couldn't buy the either

So you're saying you can't sell full auto weapons? j*****s. A FFL dealer can sell them and you need a Class III license to buy them.

The expiration of the assualt weapons ban was a subject the Bush campaign never, ever wanted to see come up. It's one of those issues that will only cost Bush votes, he isn't gaining any from it. There aren't any liberals or undecided voters saying "aww hell yeah, the ban is lifted and I'm changing my vote!" Anybody who wanted the ban gone was voting Bush already.

Kerry wound up playing this topic perfectly last night. Not only did he make Bush look impotent, but he even mentioned the terrorist activity associated with said weapons. Very well done, and Bush lost some votes. Now will it be significant? Well I don't know, but the 2000 election came down to 500 Floridians.

yeah - the assault weapons ban was really good for the people! I couldn't have ever ordered a SKS or used AR-15 with it in affect!

It didn't stop shit, if you wanna do something effective then do it - if not, don't launch some dilluted ass ban that doesn't do shit.

Explain what the ban really accomplished? Nothing basically other than forcing some weapon companies to retool slightly.

It accomplished what John Kerry did in 20 years in the senate - nothing.
