I know. It's inconcievable to me that he's leaving. It's like the Prince of Darkness just walked out of the gates of Hell for parts unknown, and simply said "k, cya".

One of my main gripes about the Bush camp was that biblethumping anti-porn nut job, Ashcroft. I feel a lot better now that he's back to raping little boys or whatever those psycho religious f***s like to do in their spare time.

Why are people so scared of non-atheists?
It seems every time I see anyone here comment on a person classified as religious that person is immediately vilified and apparently can't be considered as any more than a hypocritical crazy person. You guys do realize that under Ashcroft's tenure virtually all violent crime rates have decreased by roughly 30%, in addition to a definite decline in teenage drug use?
What is wrong with the Torah's message of social justice, monotheism, and universal education? Are the histories or the writings of the prophets offensive? Or maybe the Christian texts?

The problem is that a deep belief in your own personal religion tends to breed a contempt for anyone who does not share your views, a sense of superiority, in at least the moral realm. One of the core tenets of evangelical Christianity is to preach to the non-believers, so that you may convert and save their souls. Islam as well, one of hte core beliefs is a need to spread Islam to all corners of the world eventually. To me, that is a bit offensive, and I would tell anyone who tried to convince me that their religion was better than mine (or my lack of one) to shove their crucifix up their f*****g ass. Religion is based upon faith, not fact or science, and these factors combined trouble many people.
I do believe that many of the general public do not want solely atheists in office, or necessarily fear religious people. We just prefer our government to be secular in public, and leave religion to the privacy of their own homes and places of worship.

Good answer. That's an excellent point about the evangelical aspects of Islam and Christianity. Funny that these two religions pulled all of their source material from a religion lacking in evangelical zeal.

Thanks for the praise. And I agree, even though I am personally a non-believer, I respect Judaism more than the other 2 religions of the Book and am certain it has done less harm in history to mankind precisely because it is not a religion that seeks to convert the masses.
Not all Christians or Muslims necessarily follow through on the evangelical aspects of their faith, in fact I would say the majority in this country prefer to live and let live.
However those who do often get the most publicity, and when they hold a position of power, it can easily be perceived as threatening or offensive to anyone of a different faith. (or even someone of the same faith but less orthodox)

Hopefully they find someone a little more conservative and hard on crime/terrorism.
Ashcroft was way too soft and liberal.

Just echoing Vek's statements, the religion/god fearing aspect of it alone isn't bad, I could care less, but when one attempts to make their personal religious beliefs into governmental policy, to save my soul, I get f*****g p****d.
The reason the United States of America's Government is against stem-cell research isn't because it feels the premise is unfounded, it isn't because no positive results have been achieved, it's because it's /morally/ wrong. Let's just ignore that the embryos would be destroyed ANYWAY. Religious based ethics deciding Governmental policy.
Need I bring up Ashcroft's, War on Pornography? Gay marriage b******t? Etc?
Stupid shit like that lights me up. f*****g ignorance.

P.s. Personally, I think hardcore athiests have a tendancy to be just as bad as hard core christians. Everything in moderation, no one /knows/!

Yeah, fanatics are just f*****g screwy. One thing about them, though, as a people, they sure are easy as hell to manipulate. It's the moderates that you've gotta watch out for, you never know what they are thinking! Fanatics are predictable.

Unfortunately, this particular spic is the one who drafted the memos about how the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to Al Quaeda, and how there's really nothing wrong with torturing prisoners.
He's still got to be better than Ashcroft though. Doesn't he?

The GC doesn't apply to terrorists..
If they want rights they can form a nation and fight in a conventional war. As long as they run into a group of kids and blow themselves up we can cut off fingers.
