I don't necessarily mean because of terrorism (although that's part of it too), but mainly because of normal everyday things.
Language reflects the state of a country (for example try looking up the word "understatement" in italian - there's none. Now listen to an italian, and you'll know why) and what is among the things you tell someone who's leaving? "Take care" or "Be Safe" - things associated with dangerous tasks.
The question also doesn't apply to yourself, but to americans in general - do you believe they are more scared of everyday things than citizens of other nations? (driving home, leaving the house after dark, going to playgrounds with their kid etc)

I think the more you have, the more fearful and insecure you tend to be. Americans have a lot, so we tend to focus on unknown, obscure ways that what we have might be taken away. If your main concern is how you're going to make enough money to buy food and shelter you're a lot less concerned about imaginary dangers.
