I know a few of you have really nice tanks, and I used to have a 20 gallon and a 15 gallon up and running, but the 20 got a leak and I don't feel like using a 15 gallon because I want it to be a focus point in the room. I was just wondering if you would suggest any fish, I wanted to stay freshwater due to the amount of work a salt water tank takes to keep up. I was thinking about getting a 60 gallon tank. Not really sure about aquariums been a few years since I've done one, I want it to look nice and be big enough for some of the nicer looking fish. Any input would help a ton.

My 125 gallon tank sprung a leak last night Sad Had to drain the whole thing and transfer my fish to a 55g my neighbor let me borrow.

Not sure if I'm going to have to sell the fish to a pet store, or buy another 125g tank...im broke as shit...so...;p

As far as freshwater fish go, african cichlids are cool, the malawai lake ones anyway. Some look as colorful as salt water...my neighbor has a 120g with african cichlids, looks pretty good.

I have a forty with a 2 inch snapping turtle, 3 fresh water crabs, 2 quarter sized snails, mosquito fish for the turtle to chase and a few neons for color. Its also FILLED with fresh water shrimp, they are breeding in the tank. Red claws, fire shrimp and 2 others.

Color full bugs make for a better tank. There are so many out there, you just have to find a place that stocks them.

And it gives the turtle something to hunt.

That turtle looks bigger than two inches.

When I had a 10g set up as a feeder tank (rosy reds + shrimp (i think they're called glass shrimp?), the shrimp bred in there but the rosy reds usually would attack the females bearing eggs and eat them ;p

How far is your water level from the top of the tank?

Ciclids. Pretty colors, easy to take care of, fun to watch. These pics are crappy and they are much more vibrant in person. I personally only have bright yellow and neon blues in my tank.

Just type cichlid into google images and you'll get an idea of how many different species there are, and which ones you want.

Heres 4 that I liked on the first page..

Cichlids are very pretty, but *can* be high maintenance. Its a good option though thery tend to like bigger tanks. If youre staying under a 55, you could go with tetras( 3 or 4 varieties) and a few large angel fish. The regular angels, nah, but the veil's are beautiful. I have an 80 with 4 veil blacks, a school of 30 or so neon tetras, and another 10 or so various tetras. Very colorful and low maintenance.

kbarr wins with the snapping turtle. Those things are awesome. We catch them in our yard about twice a year. Huge ones that probably weigh 30 pounds or so. Mean m***********s.

Although shy, you should consider a Black Ghost Knifefish. They are very nice to sit and watch. Some tend to be lazy, while others are full of energy.

African Cichlids are hearty and colorful but somewhat boring. South American Cichlids and Fish like Jack Dempseys and Pikes are fun and territorial while being realtively easy to maintain...

So what did this have to do with my post? Nothing, exactly, now shut the f**k up with your stupid posts.

On another note, I think I might look into some Cichlids for the tank with a school of neon tetras, just because every tank I've ever had has had a school of them.

Its 4 inches from the top with lots of branches and rock platforms for the turtle to hang out on. I have a feeding ring set up right over his favorite spot for the standard floating food. I imagine the shrimp eat each others stuff, the crab too, the turtle just inhales them when he can. There is so much java moss/plants and spots to hide, the adults out think the turtle most times. If not I get more:) He rips apart every baby snail that hits the sand bottom. The 2 big ones will remain alone, their offspring are instant turtle snacks. And thats not a picture of my turtle, it looks about 3 or 4 inches though.

The biggest thing about keeping fish is learing how to test and maintain water quality.

Its easy.

And gold fish are not tropical, I think they like neutral PH and cooler water.

I would recommend South American Cichlids over Africans. IMO, African Cichlids tend to be a bit more aggressive, especially if you want more than a couple of species. However, African Cichlids tend to be a bit more colorful all the time (most of the South American Cichlids develop better color only during breeding).

Be careful where the store gets it stock from, especially if you want to breed. Asian or Florida fish farm cichlids tend to be sterile due to breeding practices, water (extreme basic conditions), etc. German or wild caught are usually the best. My favorite South American cichlid species are Apistogramma Nijsseni and Microgeophagus Ramirezi. Both prefer slightly acidic water.

Be careful with neons and cardinals. I consider them little plague bearers. I have found neons especially vulnerable to velvet and ick. Neons (and sometimes cardinals) also do not get along with serpae tetra and occasionally emporer/phantom tetra.

Goldfish are sewage fish. If you start up a cichlid tank... don't get them. They are heavy polluters.

Thanks for the information about the cichlids, what would you reccomend for another type of fish in the tank? I was thinking about a smaller type of fish, something that would look good in a small school of fish. I know I could just google that, but I was looking for someone with experience with cichlids and how they would react with each other.
