I'm not able to pronounce this sound that occurs in many words, I'd like to have someone who knows how to pronounce it spell it more or less phonetically if possible.
BTW Russian's a total blast.. I've never had something so difficult be so much fun.
The words are:
Вы
Мы
I think it's along the lines of "vwee" but the language guide points to it being a labio-dental fricative like the I in ill... but that doesn't make any f*****g sense.. the letter I in ILL appears nowhere near the area of any labio-dental fricatives. Oh and I don't have any Russian friends. I've been trying to find a Russian coffee partner online but they all want ****.. which I suppose isn't that bad but still.
Edit : ok the fricative makes sense for the "v" but it's the ы part I'm stuck on

I speak serbo-croation fluently. Post the actual word, I don't know how to read this phonetic shit. Or post where you see the word. 70% chance I at least know how to say it.

I could say it for you over the phone easily Nah, I studied Russian for 4 years in high school and 4 semesters in college, was even confused for a native speaker in NYC once lol.
But alas, to try to type that sound phonetically or attempt to describe it is beyond my abilities =/

Mug that is the actual word.
Вы is informal "you" as in Вы - мой лучший друг
Мы is "we"as in Мы - из Англии
It's very possible that you simply don't use this construct in your language.. if you did you might recognize it. Vek.. I may have to call you sometime.. Russian's kicking my ass

Holy shit. I had some incentive to learn some Russian when I read your post in the pic thread and the fact that I have a crush on a 47 year old Russian lady, but after seeing all that shit you just typed, it went right out the door.

I agree it was daunting but the language itself is fascinating. It's so much more straightforward and systematic than English. English is just downright f****d up as a language. Russian may be alien to an English speaker but it's 10000x easier to learn than if it were the other way around, being Russian and trying to learn English.

copy and pasted from a ukrainian tutorial thingy.... not sure if this will help you or if its the same (russian and ukrainian are pretty much the same to me)
И - this is rather difficult letter. If you know a little Polish or Russian , you know this letter. In Polish it's letter y and in Russian it's letter Ы. If you don't know this languages, I try to explain. This is very, very voiceless sound i (I meen Ukrainian i).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ь - this letter isn't sound. It's symbol of soften of Consonant. For example - the Ukrainian word "кінь" - horse. In this case the constant "н" will be the soften, as in English word "nick" is soften the letter "N". The symbol "ь" soft only previous consonant. This symbol can be in the end or in the middle of word, but never in the beginning of the word.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ю -. As I told this letter consist of two sound [ju] as in English word "you". But not in any case, only if "ю" is in the beginning of word, or if "ю" is after vowel. But if "ю" is after consonant, this sound soft this consonant and read as Ukrainian "у". For example, the Ukrainian word "люлка" (pipe). There the letter "л" is softed and the word maybe reading as "льулка". Also the letter "ю" after consonant soft this consonant.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Я - It's similar letter as "ю". This letter spell as [ja], but after consonant this letter soft this consonant and spell as Ukrainian "а". For example, the Ukrainian word "лялка" (doll). In this word the letter "я" softed the first "л" and this letter spell as Ukrainian "a". All word we can read as "льалка". Also, in the beginning of word or after vowel the letter "я" spell as [ja], and after consonant this letter soft this consonant and spell as Ukrainian " ".
~~~~~~~~~~
so im taking that is a soft b followed by l sound not sure if there is a russian rule to it other then the bl sound like blood.
heh, this is quite similar to the pronunciations that Tolkien has for his words...some characters indicate soft or hard sounds rather than a sound itself, etc....
I have a friend that is fluent in Russian...I can email him and ask him. He spent a lot of years as a Russian linguist in military intel. Will do so this morning.
Thank you hun and thank you hun2 (Tam). That Ukranian guide is right on in some places, others it's not quite but I imagine that's to be expected. The ь is sort of like the sound you hear in the english word "pew" or "few" but not "new" (yet one more example of how inconsistent and broken English is as a spoken language).
Ю is always "yoo" in Russian. That's where it appears different from Ukranian, in Russian the "oo" sound is always represented by the letter "y". So ctyl is pronounced "stool"
I'm confused as to what they meant by И - in Russian it's letter Ы. They are two different letters in Russian. The И represents the "ee" in "street" if it has no accent. If it has an accent or mostly following a consonant it's more like "yee". Excuse me for example is извините "eezveeneetye".
Ы is the one I'm currently clawing my face over. I asked some guy on the 20th floor of the building to pronounce this (he is from Moscow) and he said it like 50 times and my mouth simply cannot replicate that sound it drives me f*****g nuts. The closest I can compare it to is the "i" sound in the french word "feuille" but even that's not close. It's a pretty unique sound.
Well thanks for the help.. I'm sure I'll eventually get it.. maybe I need to stop trying.
This is what my friend Tim wrote:
The two russian words are actually only two characters long, not three The second character ы is what I call the 61 letter. It is pronounced like a slightly wierd ee. A normal long e is pronounced ee and the tip of your tongue is against the back of your teeth. Russian has this sound as the и character. Good ole 61 is pronounced ee with the tip of the tongue on the roof (palate) of mouth.
So a phonetic pronunciation would be along the lines of V-we and M-we, but with a very soft w. The w actually kinda blends in with the first constantant as the words are only a single syllable. This is one of those sounds that most foreigners never get right and just kind of wing!
I don't know that this helps you a whole helluva lot
