I'm reluctant to buy a another substandard geforce card after experiencing the FX series where the 5900 was the only f*****g card that performed. Has anyone got the 6800 GT? Was it worth the bucks?
After looking at the specs, the only difference between the GT and ultra is 50 mhz core clock speed.

i am yet to even consider purchasing it (and a new power supply to allow it to work)
with the new PCI interface thats going to overtake AGP coming up, and the fact that the 6800 is basically just a powerhungry vaccuum sounding version of its predecessors (and the fact that it costs way too much) .. i cant see why anyone would want to buy it, save the people with so much $ to spend that they only buy it to see how much faster it is

The Geforce 6800 GT is a very capable card, and is already being considered the "best buy" of this newer generation of video cards (high end $400). Unlike what the guy above me says the Geforce 6800 GT (or 6800 Ultra for that matter) is NOT power hungry, and will run fine on most 300-350wt psu (tho it is recommended to have atleast a 400). If your a gamer/tweaker and you actually have an idea of wtf your doing you should have a decent psu anyway. The 2 molex config on the 6800 Ultra is for stablity when you grow the balls to overclock, not because its a "powerhungry vaccuum". If your not planning on oc'ing then you don't even need to connect the 2nd molex to the psu. The 6800 GT is a single slot solution(unlike the duel slot solution of the 6800 Ultra and older fx5900u/5950, its rather quiet. It uses 1 molex connecter and is faster and has more features then its rival the ATi x800 PRO. It can also hold its own against the 6800 Ultra and ATi x800XT/PE especially when overclocked..
If your looking to get a Geforce 6800 GT I'd recommend the BFG 6800 GT OC (its comes pre overclocked 25mhz). BFG also provides a lifetime warrenty unlike other card distributers. eVGA is another good choice.

Actually it is wrong, as the site needs updating. The 480wt thing was a safety measure Nvidia used when they unvieled the card to the public, and sent cards out to the press. The "requirement" has sense then been brought down to 350 wt psu (heh, if you don't believe me go inspect some boxes at your local computer store or whatever). The card (6800 Ultra) also runs perfectly fine on a 350wt psu(long as your not heavy oc'ing it) Some reports are saying that the 6800 GT will run fine on a 300wt (but seriously with todays equipment its almost a requirement to have atleast a 350-400wt psu, when you combine in the other stuff like the CPU, motherboard, the 2-5 case fans + HSF/fan, disk drives, etc etc.

this i did not know
coolness
i still think with pci express on the horizon the 6800 will just end up being the best of the old ..
but at least now i have a little more respect for the 6800 ..

The nv45 (6800 Ultra using PCIe) a pretty nice chip, should be hitting stores sometime in Q3. One of the big benefactors of PCIe is that the cards that use it can draw power directly from the slot (tho some will still have molex connectors for when you need more power to do overclocking and whatnot). PCIe (atleast for the video cards, NV45 for Nvidia and x800 for ATi) aren't going to be as big this generation simply because they are still using standard AGP technology (through the use of bridges) which don't take full use of the PCIe technology. The next generation of video cards (like 6months-year+ away still, Nvidia NV50 and ATI r500) will probably be the first cards to take full use of PCIe's features. Tho PCIe does have some "omg teh win" features (if you have the cash) such as Nvidia's (3Dfx!) SLI support on upcoming motherboards and Alienware's ALX stuff (the duel video card stuff). The 6800 Ultra is most definitly the "best of the old" for this generation (sorry ATi fanboi's), its true power has yet to be unleashed tho (for one there isn't even an offical driver, all the 6series Nvidia forceware drivers are still beta, tho they get better and faster and cleaner with every release which is like daily!). When it rolls out on store selves in its PCIe SLI compatable goodness, baby jesus will smile on geeks everywhere.

Firing Squad sucks. Anandtech and Guru3D are better, personal experience with the cards helps a bit too =P Cool Goraz, and good luck with the card its great. If you have any problems with the card (driver updates, whatever) PM me and I can help out a bit.

Yeah I'm gonna tweak around with the beta drivers. I heard the 61.74 perform the best as of now with stabliity and IQ so I'll mess around when I get the card. Thanks for the offer.

Try out the 62.11 aswell, they were leaked yesterday and I've had some pretty good results so far(benchmarking in 3Dmark03, Farcry and UT2k4). The 61.72 are a very good set(+ have SM3.0 enabled) and are WHQL approved.

I have an Nvidia Geforce 4 TI4200 with AGP8X. Will this be good enough for Doom 3, EQ2, WoW, etc., or will I have to upgrade?
Same question for my hardware: P4 2.67ghz, 1 gig ram. How much will I have to upgrade?

No. You need an FX series atleast.

Actually the 61.76 RC was just released on the Nvidia Developers site (you can download them from various tweaking/fanboi sites like Guru3d). Which means the 62.xx series are possibly fakes (tho for fakes they were pretty fast drivers ). But either way and offical 6series Forceware driver will be out soon.

I have the same card as you Silvermouse. I'm sure it will work fine for WoW but I'm not sure about EQ2 and Doom3.

I think you will be able to make it work, I've heard of EQ2 running on worse, but you will have to turn off tons of options, and it will still probably suck. I'd upgrade if I were you, just wait until the last minute to make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

Yes, you will be able to run EQ2, HL2, Doom3, WoW, etc.
No, you will not be able to run any of those games in their "full glory" tho. But they WILL be playable. The Geforce Ti4200 is a pretty strong and capable card. One of the dissadvantages is that the ti4200 is a directX8 card. So you wont be able to see some of the cooler features of DirectX 9's SM 2.0 (such as the pretty water and lighting effects) in EQ2. Doom3 is a OpenGL game, and Nvidia does OpenGL the best. Tho Doom3 is going to be a hog of a game so the Ti4200 will barely inch by.
The Ti4200 will get you by in those games (at lower detail settings) but your best bet is to upgrade your video card to something along the lines of a ATi9800pro/Geforce fx5900 or better. Your processor is ok, but with an incoming price cut on Intel processors soon it'd be best to try and upgrade that to atleast a 3ghz or better (if your mobo supports it!)
