|
|
|
I have an oral presentation tomorrow for my english class, discussing my major (computer programming). Which isn't even my major, as I'm still undecided, but I had to choose something to write a paper and do an oral presentation on, so decided on CP.
I have a few questions to anyone who majored in Computer Programming and is/was working as a programmer.
1) What exactly do you do at work on a daily basis?
2) How much $ do you make per year?
3) Your education (how many years of college/what type of degree)
4) What are some drawbacks of the job? (boredom, stress, pay, etc?)
Thanks!

I'm a computer engineer but i do programming mainly in my career.
1. I do customer support, training, embedded software development, windows application development, and software product adaptation.
2. Just over 60k not counting bonuses
3. Computer Engineering bachelor's degree + Electrical Engineering bachelor's degree.
4. Drawbacks: Sometimes you have to work long hours ... basically if the project isn't done you don't go home.

If you're a "higher level underling," such as a Senior Programmer or Team Lead or something, your life will be something like this:
25% requirements gathering, manager-ish stuff, team leading, basic communication.
25% documentation (html, code comments, TODO and README files, etc), design, risk management notes, planning, shit like that.
15% actual software development (s****y coders spend 50% of their time writing s****y code, and the other 50% of their time trying to fix the fuckups from their lack of planning)
10% learning new shit.
25% new testing, regression testing (unless you are fortunate enough to have a dedicated test team - in which case you spend 90% of your time covering their asses), fixing bugs caused by Feeping Creaturitis, writing notes about bugs you've found or intend to cause.

An employed programmer will make between 35 and 120k per year, depending on experience and location.
| Pags wrote: | | 3) Your education (how many years of college/what type of degree) |
Mostly self-taught with 4 years of college.

People do not treat software development as a science yet. It's like building a house. It is not like thumb-tacking papers to a cork board.
Trying to explain to non-developers the importance of planning ahead, change management and the need for good documentation is a f*****g nightmare.

1) What exactly do you do at work on a daily basis?
Surf the internet a lot. Code a little.
2) How much $ do you make per year?
More than working at McDonalds... Choose not to answer this question, I make enough to buy the things I like
3) Your education (how many years of college/what type of degree)
2 BA's - Computer Science and Criminal Justice
4) What are some drawbacks of the job? (boredom, stress, pay, etc?)
Stress sucks (at this time of year, due to christmas season). Pay is great, benefits are outstanding. Like anything, you work your ass off you will get perks. Most places have yearly/bi-yearly bonus programs that usually end up giving you a check for 2-20% of your salery.
