When do you tip someone? When have you been tipped?
I work for a Mobile Electronics install shop. We do remote starts, alarms, video, DVD's, CD Changers, XM... cruise control. Shit, you name it, we do it.
Anyway, some of these cars are a REAL b***h to work on. and you spend your time doing a damn good job. But maybe one in fourty or so of our customers throws us a tip. Sure, they may have paid a set price for an install, but... I sure as hell am not seeing that money. I just get my flat rate of $10.50/hour reguardless of how much time I put into a job or how amazing it looks/works after I'm finished. It really sucks in that stance.
We even go as far as bringing the customers out when we're done and going over EVERYTHING we've done. Then ask for their feedback on our work and/or if they would like anything else done while we are still around. It usually doesn't do anything though (as far as tips).
So, when do you guys actually tip people? Is it only in a resteraunt situation? Have you ever tipped a car mechanic for doing a good job and not making you wait for ever?
Have you ever been tipped for an odd job you've done? I'd like to hear things.

Never.
The only time I got tipped was when I worked at a bar.
Outside myself I have tipped photographers, mechanics, food service, strippers, musicans and sometimes street performers.

I got tipped serving food, tending bar, packing houses...yes packing houses, for a moving company.
Most people forget to tip the packers, but they almost always tip the driver/movers. Think about it tho, as the pack crew for the house, we touched EVERY SINGLE THING YOU OWN right down to your underwear and toothbrush.
Not a good idea to p**s these type of people off...you don't want to know what can be done to a tooth brush by a disgruntled pack crew LOL

restaurants, the pizza guy, people who hand made something I like, valet parking, I guess that is it.
edit: people who bag groceries, and the people who work the door at clubs also.

I've never once been tipped in my life. I try to follow the usual expected rules for tipping (e.g. http://www.findalink.net/tippingetiquette.php) as long as the service was good. I'll tip a cabby, 20% at a restaurant, bag handlers $1/bag, etc. I never tip in situations like the one you described, where tipping isn't really customary because it just seems awkward for me. I'm not really sure if I adhere to this 100%, but I think I typically tip people who provide some sort of service which I'm capable of providing myself but didn't.

I've worked retail jobs in the past, and many times I've had a b***h of a time getting people out the door with the stuff they need and want. I've never expected a tip for this, because I was compensated by hourly wages and supplemented, on occasion, by commissions. Tipping is not feasible in situations where you are purchasing large items, because there would be no easy scale/guidelines for tipping. Tipping wouldn't have worked out for me in retail, because i'd never want to help the clueless guy who might buy that 10 dollar keyboard after an hour of explaining what a keyboard is. I'd also probably go insane if i spent 3 hours helping someone buy a computer only to be stiffed on the tip.
The only places I think tips should apply are service jobs where timeliness and quality of service are extremely important to the experience. Services such as bartending, waitressing, haircuts, food delivery, valet, and newspaper/mail delivery are acceptable for tipping. In these situations, half ass service just won't do. Tipping potential drives the server to give you the best service whenever possible because it's worth money to them. You don't want your food wrecked or late when it's presented, you don't want your car all scratched up when valet'd, and you don't want a crappy haircut to make you look like a fool for a couple weeks.

I tip most people in a "service" capacity.....from the doormen and car jockeys that I have dealt with to my manicurist to waitstaff, busboys, mechanics, yes, mobile stereo installers, etc. I've given money to the guy who seats you at shows in Atlantic City, etc., in order to get a booth rather than the usual chairs and table, too. I have always tipped 20 percent inside a restaurant. (de rigeur in NY)
I worked for my ex in a transmission shop for many years. While he would never accept tips (even if he did the actual work), if the customers were insistent, he would suggest the customer pick up some foodstuffs for the guys. The guys did accept tips, however. I accepted presents and got lots of them
At Christmas, our best customers as well as our major parts vendors sent us baskets, booze, etc....but some customers gave me cash, gift certificates, etc., for taking care of them over the year. We always sent gifts to our corporate customers (commuter bus fleets, DPWs, etc.) but they were always directed to the bosses mostly, although he gave gifts to the shop foremen as well, at times.
Oh yea, I get my oil changed now at WalMart...I actually found a competent person to do so at my local one. He will not take a tip. Company policy

hmm yup i always got tipped at jobs... even a self serve gas station i would sometimes get tips rofl being a girl owns!
best job i had as far as tips went was the poolhall. vip snooker lounge guys tipped awesome well plus bought me drinks and cigars, the patio drunken crew tipped alright, the regulars tipped great, and the pool and dart teams that came in once a week tipped pretty good too.
i was making 7.50 an hour plus tips and nine times outta ten my tips at the end of the night were more then double my pay.
the people i tip most, people who deliver goods to me, food service people when i go out (rare that i go out, but i tip them well according to service recieved) and i tip my hair dresser well

for me to tip there's really only one criteria
They have preformed a personalized service and taken care of something/one so I didn't have to do it myself.
Hair dresser, nail tech, lawn guy, food delivery, waitpeople, house packing, car parking, house cleaning, car washing...that kind of stuff. I figure if someone is preforming a service I could do myself if I wanted to, they pretty much deserve a "thank you"
As far as bar/restaraunts, I'm a heavy tipper by nature, having worked in the industry for years. My average tip for a good waiter/barkeep is usually around 25-30%....but there have been plenty of times I've tipped 50% on a tab after recieving service so far above and beyond the norm it was fantastic! This usually happens at chain eateries, TGIFridays, Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday's and those places.
There's been 3 times in the past 8 years I have tipped 100% of the bill. The staff deserved every penny of it too...and the look on their face is classic You know you've made their whole night. The best part is when the manager comes up to make sure you didn't make a mistake on the bill...ya get to at-a-boy the server twice that way
you'd be amazed at the service we get when we go back into those places too *grin*

Being over here in the UK i have learned alot about the value of tipping. In england, you NEVER tip waitresses, bar tenders. It just doesnt happen.
My first reaction to this was, of course exitement, because I could save a couple of quid going to the pubs. But there is one thing that suffers. The service.
Bartenders in England are LAZY, they sit around with huge lines and because they arent working for tips, they have no reason to rush around like the ladies in Cayote Ugly.
So tipping aint so bad, I miss my speedy Canadian bartenders. Bless them!
