I'm in favor of neither speaking slang nor abstaining from it. There are definite values to learning slang and there's an obvious downside to it. I think there are around 3500 words in the English language that are considered "essential". There are upwards of 6000 words that are not. Most of these words - hate to say it, are slang. A good chunk of the English we speak each and every day is considered either an idiomatic expression or slang. When you're learning a new language it's critical you at some point turn your attention to slang because otherwise people won't understand you or will treat you differently.
I am not, however, in favor of people claiming they speak
A) a "proper" version of a language
B) with a "neutral" accent
C) more correctly than someone else.
Unless you're speaking the language literally backwards, then you're not speaking it wrong. And even that's debatable. It just bugs me that people try to classify and dissect language as if it were, say, the proper way to walk up a flight of stairs or the proper way to perform brain surgery. It's simply not like that.
What irritates me about Vekril is that he tries to take a social issue like unmotivated troublesome black inner-city culture and blame it on phenomena like Ebonics or Hip Hop.

You're making quite a sweeping generalization with this scenario and I'd like you to clarify it, please.
You're assuming that said person on said phone conversation with said customer in China does not understand that he can't behave that way on the phone with a customer and does not take his job very seriously.
That's got nothing to do with language and more to do with his own attitude about his job. Not language's fault. Stop blaming Ebonics for it. We have HR departments for issues like this. He gets fired, and if he has the slightest sense of self-preservation he'll learn he can't do that shit. Problem solved.
Does he still bust out into full-blown Ebonics when he drives home in his car with hydraulics but no insurance or headlights, gets home to his state-assistance paid apartment and beats his wife and 3 illegitimate kids while drunk on stolen alcohol?
You bet your ass he does.
Wait a second are you also implying we don't have demeaning terms in this language apart from those found in Ebonics?

Let me try this for the 5th time in this thread. I do not blame hip hop or ebonics for the problems of black America. I have always said they are SYMPTOMS of the dysfunctional culture that serve to perpetuate it and hold it back, but I have never said they are the root cause. We seem to agree on the cause, a broken culture stretching back generations that only seems to get worse with time.[/quote]
