Well maybe in SpEd classes a D is passing, I wouldn't know. In normal schools, it's not.
Anything below a 70% in a normal school is considered not passing.
D is a nice way of saying "You totally f****d up, but props for at least showing up"

When I was in school in California, a D was passing, but when I moved to Texas, a C was the lowest passing grade.

Anyways, throughout middle school and high school a D was considered a passing grade. D is a passing grade here in college, but you need a C to fulfill pretty much all major, minor and general foundation requirements (actually a B in some courses).

In Canada we're normal so we grade like the following:
Under 50% = Fail
50 And Over = Pass.
We also use the metric system because 0 = Freezing and that's just too easy to remember.
None of this 72.634893 = Pass B-(/A+D*C) shit.

Depends on the school, in my HS D was passing though not favorably looked upon. College though, well that's a different story (which is the story we're seeing now)

well, if you noticed no "pass" or "fail" for that person's class has been determined, it is just the letter for that paper.
Why should it be a fail?
the person stayed on topic, lacked some basic essay writing skills, but conveyed his point (that the main character was a butt-**** having gangsta) and made the teacher laugh(something all kids will fail at doing 99% of the time.
I think a D is perfect, shows that he has a tone (a blatantly arrogant one), a general structure, detailed examples (despite lack of fact) with reasoning and analysis. Depending on which class this was written for, (probably a freshman literature class of some sort) the grading would be different. Since it probably is an english class and the paper wasn't entirely graded on fact, the paper recieved the grade that would require attention (to stop smoking) but not completely regard this very funny essay as a complete failure. After all, it DID make it here.

funniest grading scale i ever had was a 1st year bio class
it was the guy's first year teaching something
anyway he want to use a bell curve.
so he said the middle grade is an B and due to some complete s***w
ups that only showed up for some reason on test days
B would often end up being 60 to 70 lol
back in my high school , below 70 was failing
but as a kid, Happy Days messed me up as high 60's was still passing
