The question is the subject, so… that's about it.
I've been getting mixed signals, and I would like this clarified if at all possible. All this talk about zones and how they're handled translates as "instancing" in my head, and these thoughts are NOT happy thoughts, let me tell you.

Well if having a lot of instanced areas is against your private MMO religion, I'd suggest you keep well away form Age of Conan. Remember, it's made by Funcom, and those are the people that brought us Anarchy Online way back in the day, and Anarchy Online is the game that pioneered instanced dungeons.
