Funcom and Eidos confirmed that the Age of Conan Beta has passed 1 million sign-ups.
Morten Larssen, VP of Funcom Sales and Marketing, said on the press conference, that Funcom has not been able to find any higher beta numbers for MMOs in the western world, adding: “We believe it represents the largest ever beta sign-up figure in the history of the genre.”
In addition to the incredible beta numbers, Funcom confirms that almost 800.000 gamers have signed up for the Clan of Conan newsletter. Also, a growth in official forum community has been noted.
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures launches 20th of May in North America and Oceania; and 23rd of May in Europe.

I'm willing to bet that the launch wont be smooth. Servers will be lagging/crashing within 24 hours of release on each end of the pond imo.

AoC has also created a new type of "experimental" PvP mode, called culture-pvp.
from Funcom:

As part of celebrating the release of Age of Conan we are happy to unravel a brand new PvP ruleset that has not previously been disclosed: The Culture PvP ruleset! Note that this new PvP server type is experimental and players on these servers must expect an ongoing change to the ruleset.
The goal of this PvP server-type is to stimulate war behind the three cultures of Cimmeria, Aquilonia and Stygia. As a player on a Culture PvP server, you are shielded from lone travelers of your own culture, however you may still group with any culture and form a group and attack anyone.
The Culture PvP ruleset is an evolving ruleset that will be tweaked and polished based on player-feedback in the months to come. Although it is, at least currently, possible to make guilds across cultures, pure culture groups and guilds will be endorsed on this server, and as such players on the Culture PvP servers must prepare that the future will hold continued changes to the ruleset.
We have changed to ruleset on two servers that were previously flagged as full PvP. The homes for the Culture PvP servers are:
Bane (US)
Twilight (EU)

Isn't Warhammer also approaching this number? Last I checked it was some 700,000 or so... with all its hype, I find it shocking that AoC surpassed it in signups. I tried AoC at release though - it was a resource monster, and perhaps not my type of game in the first place.

Yeah, I think all the servers will be crashing and it will lead up to everybody quitting AoC untill the full game comes out. Its not gonna go as the producers planned I bet!
