OK, let me see if I got it straight: You can get skill points from three different sources: Leveling up, which gets you just 1 per level; Finishing quests, which get you a set number of skills as a reward; And buying them off of trainers, which improve your skill directly. Is that right? I'm only just now starting in GW, and I'm still learning…

You've pretty much got it covered, except you shouldn't say you're getting skill points from quests or trainers, because that would imply that you can spend them as you like (much in the same way you spend level-based points). Instead, you unlock and/or improve skills, specific ones for each trainer or quest.
