Personally I'm dissapointed. Soon we're going to be stuck with MS, Nintendo, EA, and Sony as our only developers with minor studios beneath them for consoles, and for the PC we'll have the giants that release one super hit every 4 yrs (Id, Valve, etc). Too bad game development costs so much anymore.
This story hits me though because a friend of mine works for Acclaim in Austin.

If your product sucks, nobody will buy it. It's as simple as that.
When they stopped making kick ass NBA Jam games where you could slam dunk as Bill Clinton against Scorpion from Mortal Combat, they stopped making fun games.

NBA Jam was made by Midway, just published by Acclaim for consoles... so basically someone sat in an office and took the code out of the arcade, ported it to the SNES, PSX, Genesis etc and changed a bit of code to comply with the system of choice, added features to an already existing code base, and put it in a box.
Not alot of work overall...

This is true. Windows XP is actually pretty nice. I still prefer Linux to windows, but I don't have too many gripes about XP

Like it's stated above, Acclaim releases too many mediocre games and doesn't have a single oustanding series of games that successfull game companies do.
NFL Quarterback Club has always been one of the worst yearly released football games.
NBA Jam never really offered anything new from year to year, other than new players with the exact same moves.
Other games that have brought about their demise:
Mary-Kate & Ashley: Sweet 16
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
Legends of Wrestling
Summer Heat Beach Volleyball
No game company can really survive without a blockbuster hit that makes fans demand sequels to. It would be fine to release these s****y games if they had something that would be an instant money maker the moment it was released.
Konami will always have Castlevania and Contra to rely on.
Capcom will always have Megaman, Resident Evil, Street Fighter.
Square can always dish out a new Final Fantasy.
Nintendo will always have their infinite supply of famous characters that they can mold into any type of game they want.
If Interplay had just released more than two Fallout games in the past f*****g decade they wouldn't be struggling right now either.

NBA Jam was the bo-shizzle. Me and my buddies still play NBA Hangtime on the 64 he has occasionally.

On a side note, I don't know anyone whose actually paid for Windows or Office since 1995.
edit: except for businesses, because they don't like getting sued.
