My parents get killer deals at the Blockbuster near their house. It seems they always order too much and sell their new release DVDs after a couple of weeks of rentals for extremely cheap. Usually $9.99 and they always have a 3 for 2 deal going.
I'm jealous 'cause they never do that at the one near my apartment 
Anywho... I don't really shop around online, I just hit up Bestbuy on Tuesdays (release days) whenever something new I want comes out. Often they're on sale for around $15-17, which I can live with.

Once I started Netflix, though, I had no need to buy. They have an awesome selection of more obscure movies that you can't find at Blockbuster and the business concept is great.

well you can download vcd screeners 
Or you can buy dvd-rw drive and try to copy them
(blanks here cost $8 tho, stupid f*****g taxes )
program called dvd-copyone is kinda nice, takes dvd's and makes vcd's. But the stupid crack for it doesn't work.

i have a friend who has the like big netflix subssription and he just rips em and burns em on blank DVDs.. total cost per DVD is about $5 not including his time ..
not too shabby

I don't buy many DVDs, but I think some are worth owning.
I also love the director comment feature and never miss that whenever I watch a DVD.

You can usually find good stuff in the bargain bins. I got the following brand new for 5.99 each:
Cannonball Run
Princess Bride
The Man With Two Brains
The Three Amigos
I wouldn't pay more than like 8 bucks for one, but then again I'm not that huge of a movie fan. I just have other stuff I need to spend my cash on right now... =\
