If you want to be sure that all games run smoothly you should buy nvidia. ATI is/was famous about it's bad drivers. So I would vote for nvidia.

my dad was a serious gamer. but he was old school. he would always tell me the real gamers use nVidia. i was building this rig im typing on right now and i researched both brands. all my friend use nvidia and i looked at some of the ATI cards and i dont see how people would buy them over nvidia. nvidia is so much better. imo of course

nVidia all the way, I've had some ATI cards in the past (love that 9800 pro) but I've had much better success with nVidia cards, especially from eVGA (their step-up program is great too). Currently have a 9800 GTX and it runs like a champ.

I used to be a diehard Nvidia fan, but a good friend of mine talked me into getting a Radeon 4870 for my new card over the GTX 260.

God, I'm so glad I did too. It's been a long time since I've been so happy with a video card.

I'd definitely recommend the 4870 to even the most die-hard Nvidia fans. Razz

I've always had nvidia graphics cards since I've never really had any problems with them. Can't really say too much about ATI but I'm happy with nvidia that I see no need to switch.

Well ATI, since "nVidea" isnt a company.

But on a more serious note - it all depends on the time. Sometimes ATI is giving a better price to performance ratio - sometimes nVidia is.

nVidia is known to have better Linux support though ATI has been stepping that up.

Anyways today I would go with ATI 4000 series.

Actually nVidia does not give you any support. Its the several companies that are licensed to sell their cards that provide support, and each have different levels of support/policies. E.g. XFX, eVGA, PNY

nvidia, although they go out of style too quick =/
the step up program is good that they offer, new video cards can be upgraded and you just pay the difference.

Whomever has the better price/performance ratio when i'm buying. That said, I've gone from a ti4200 to a 6600gt to a 9600gt, so yeah.

ATI Radeon HD 4870 is the best out right now. Now imagine 2 4870x2? 4x graphic cards Surprised

4870 beats 9800x2 Surprised

So what do you say now?

9800 GX2 is 2 gpu's where the 4870 is a single a better comparison would be vs the 4870x2 where the 9800gx2 would be slaughtered.

The Nvidia 9 range is rebranded & relocked 8 range chips they are a waste of money imo.

The 9800 gx2 will date much quicker than the 4870 is also more expensive & will be chased by rebates every month under the current market conditions.

The 4850 offers best bang for buck at present it does however run hot aftermarket coolers deal with the best however now there is a few being released with improved coolers on them.
My pick would be the new HIS 4850 with ICEQ4

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-102-HT&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938&name=HIS%20ATI%20Radeon%20HD%204850%20IceQ%204%20Turbo%20512MB%20GDDR3%20TV-Out/Dual%20DVI/HDMI%20(PCI-Express)%20-%20Retail

It does only have a 1 year warranty where is sucky.
But at present its the only duel slot 4850 so the hot air is vented out of the cases instead of building up inside.

In the long run the best beat at present is the 4870 at the moment there is none with an above stock cooler that vents air, but doesn’t have the same degree of problems with heat as the 4850 so stock cooling is ok.
Its unlikely there will be many variations of the 4870 as due to the global shortage of ddr5 modules it is more cost effective for companies to put them on the 4870 x2.

The 4870 x2 is insanely powerful but its hard to justify the cost as most games don’t use it full power so your better of with a 4870 or 4850.

Altough the current price war is causing price drops on both sides.
Nvidia will eventually loses as they wont be able to compete with there current range as the 260/280 uses a 60mm chip compared to the ati R700 which is a 55mm chip this means the 260/280 costs subtanly more to produce. I dont know what the margin on the 260/280 but nvidia as been squeezing its parters quite hard of late, this price war wont help evga has already tried to jump camps but ati said no.

On the driver front ati drivers have been more stable vs nvidia for the past year there was a period 3/4 years ago when ati drivers were seriously unstable but this is no longer the case.

On the overclocking front the Ati cards are pushed to there maxed already so theres very little gain to be add.
Nvidia cards on the hand have plenty of room for overclocking & there larger surface area chips and extremly friendly to cooling in all forms.

Crossfire Vs Sli
Crossfire although cards in the same range to be compaitable ie 4850/4870 etc this gives them a major advantage over sli which has to be the same card which means in the long run adding a second sli will be no where near as helpful or easy as crossfire.

With Amd spider platforms becoming workable & performance difference becoming noticeable is going to further increase ati's market share.
Especially in Jan onwards when the new phenoms denab's 45s are released which so far are slaughtering all intel offerings.

Another ati advantage is the recent hybrid crossfire which allows onboard grapics to crossfire with a covenantal card which can give up to a 30% performance boost.

You may think am an ati fan boy but in realty I was a nividea fan of 10 years MX440 4tw! until the take over of ati by amd when the extra investment & expertise of amd pulled ati ahead in performance & cost effectives which has always been amds strategy & looking forward look like they are going to control the market for the next year.

So in closing :

You want a cheap card with good performance 4850

You want great performance & decent cooling 4870

You are insanely rich and like to overclock 280

You are insanely rich and don’t want to void your warranty 4870x2

You have more money than sense: the new Asus M3A79-T DELUXE with 4 x 4870x2 With an amd 9950 BE which in jan you can upgrade to the new denab & still be able to say you have a better pc than nasa.

I havr an ATI card x1950 and honestly it runs next gen games at like 20-30 fps tops. I wouldn't recommend ATI to anyone, most games released are made for Nvidia cards, and 8800s are so cheap now, there's really not a better option out there.

Mainly a nVidia person myself, I do like how ATI has the 4870 how, and especially how its so cheap but powerful compared to the other cards our right now. Though, I'm too lazy to buy it just for a small upgrade to my current card (9800 GTX), perhaps in a future Crossfire build or something.

nVidia, somehow it fells right... ATI isn't that popular, which makes regular people even not to think about it.
