I'm a newbie about computers and even I know that sending a message like the boy did is anything BUT hacking ;p
It's beyond sad that an initiative like that, without any malice involved, gets punished. They should be glad the boy learned something in class and put it to use. I would go on a crusade if I was the boys mom. Die Sweeny b***h! ;p

our school used to have the same exact thing, was kinda a neat instant messaging service. Send profanities to your friends while you were in computer class or something like that, it was pimp.

Its not hacking its sending msg's through dos via windows messanger.
For example, our desks here at work are numbered.
I can open a dos window, type ping <desk #> to get their ip address.
Then type net send 10.0.0.1 (example ip) <message> and a little window will open on their screen with whatever message i typed.
Only bad thing is, it gives my desk # and IP address in the msg.

The computers we had in high school were numbered by the f***s in the tech department allowing anyone that knew about it to send to computers. I did it a few times, got caught becasue I sent shit to some douche bag making fun of him so he showed the teacher and she tracked it.

my high school programming teacher was badass we did so much shit that wasnt on the ciriculum but i learned so f*****g much more than i would have with a retarded teacher like that lady.. computers are definitly an area of education that involves as much if not more experimentation by yourself to learn than actual teaching from teachers. Hell half the fun of computers is getting into an entire endless world that you can do anything in and finding out all the cool shit you can do, schools not letting kids experiment in non malicious ways are hurting people more than helping.

Last year I got in trouble for using WinPopUp with friends of mine.
(older windows go to run enter in winpopup enter)
The thing about winpopup is you must have it on to receive a message. So I was sending stuff to some friends of mine in other class rooms so it was just fine.
Then we all started talking in a system wide message that goes to all computers in the school with win pop up on.
I went to lunch and came back with the principle and 2 other people waiting on me. They have me some b*******t talk saying what I did should never be done and then they asked me how I did it. He stared at me for like 2 minuets then said, Well some of the language used was not appropriate for school use we will do something about this. He said Expect to get some form of punishment in the few days.
He treated me like some kind of ring leader for a underground hacking community.
Him and his posse did not know what they were talking about.
He forgot and I never got a punishment. ha ha

Same shit happens in my school. Kids used to use it all the time til someone sent a message to their friend saying that they were gonna smoke some weed that night, and got suspended for it.
Now they are all up tight and like "OH NOS DONT HACK R SYSTEMZ PLZ".

Last year, me and a couple other people used netsend and sent a lot of messages around the network...no bad messages either. Another STUDENT used a program in another room to track us down and we got caught. I don't think anyone got in trouble but the teacher told me that teaching someone else terroristic activities is as bad as doing it yourself.
Me and a friend still joke about me being a "terrorist".
