When people say, "I'd take a bullet for you, man." It's so pointless to say that shit. It doesn't mean anything. Of course you "would" take a bullet. It is instantaneous. Either you are killed, or you'll recover. Either way you're a martyr without having to work for anything.
Someone working 20 years of their life and living in personal poverty, sacrificing their hopes and dreams just so I can have a f*****g place to eat, to put me and my kids through school - now that is saying something.
This isn't really directed at anyone on realpoor. I just remember a group I used to hang out with saying shit like, "I'd take a bullet for every m**********r in this room."
However, when 1 member of their in-group had to have serious surgery, I didn't see a single one of them helping him during his weeks of rehab. Or pay the doctor bills. (It wasn't me, btw). Oh, sure, they'd call and have him "in their prayers," whatever the f**k good that does him.
But when it came to actually sacrificing time and effort? Driving 2 hours a day so they could give up their free evenings of partying and playing games? "Just" to help him empty his f*****g bedpan and maybe get around the house a little easier?
Was it their responsibility to? No, of course not. That would mean they'd have to live up to their word that their friends time was more important than their own.
Next time someone makes a, "Man... I'd (*insert some drastic, instant sacrifice here*) for you," pledge, just ask them to do you a couple favors instead. "Okay. How about you cook my meals and do my yardwork for 3 months, instead?"

I understand exactly what you mean. I had a friend of mine that I thought was a really really good friend, yet sure enough when I was in the hospital for 6 days due to a blood clot, she never bothered to show up once, even though her nights only consisted of going to a bar.
Yet some of my less-good friends were there almost every day, staying for upwards of an hour or more. It ment a lot to me... And since then, I stopped talking to the girl in question.

Solution: Hospitals need bars.
